Objective: Students will practice subtracting, adding, multiplying, and dividing.
Suggested Grades:3-5
Materials: A deck of cards per pair of students
(Jack = 11, Queen = 12, King = 13, Ace = 1)
Directions:
• Pair up students and give each pair a deck of cards.
• Have students shuffle the cards and lay the first five face up in a row. Then lay the rest of the deck at the end of the row, turning up the top card. This is the TARGET NUMBER.
• The students manipulate the numbers of the first five cards into an equation that will reach the target card. They can use all or just some of the cards, but you can only use a card once (unless two of the same number is turned up).
• Once an equation is achieved, that student slaps the target card and yells “TARGET!” They have to then explain their equation to their partner.
• If the student is correct, they can keep the cards that were used in their equation. If the student is incorrect, the other player can keep the cards used in the equation. The cards that were not used are placed at the bottom of the deck, and the game continues until all of the cards have been used.
• When the game is done, each player then adds up all the values of their cards (Jack = 11, Queen = 12, King = 13,
Ace = 1). Whoever has the highest total wins!
