Reading Week Coming Up the Week of February 27th & Classroom Update
Reading Week will be held the week of February 27, 2012. If you would like to come and read to our class or you know of someone that would like to be a guest reader, please email me through my contact form or at rlferreiro@interact.ccsd.net.
The theme this year is non-fiction/history.
Currently the students have been assigned a president to research and write about. I can't wait to read what they found and display it for everyone to read.
We are going to start reading Freedom's Wings, The Diary of Cory Birdsong. It is an amazing book that I try to read every year. It is a journal written from the perspective of an 8 year old African American boy in the 1800's who is born into slavery and attempts to escape. There are parts of the book that I get teary-eyed every time I read it.
Funny story, I would have started reading it earlier, but the library showed it checked out ( I don't have my own copy). I put my name down in the library so when it is returned I could check it out. A few weeks have gone by and no book. This past Friday, I am entering the school with all the students and I say hello to a 4th grade girl who was in my second grade class 2 years ago and GUESS WHAT???? She is carrying the book. I stopped her and asked her what she was doing with the book. She smiled and said how much she loved it in 2nd grade and wanted to read it again. That was such an AWESOME moment. I can't tell you how happy I was that I exposed this book to a child and they remembered it enough to find it in the library and check it out. PLUS, she gave me the book so I can read it to my current class. So a win/win situation for me. I can't wait to start reading it to the class. I am almost positive that your kids will be reporting to you the journey of Cory Birdsong. If they aren't then please prompt them to tell you what they are learning from the story written based on true events.
Once the story is over, the students have to take a quiz that they get scored on for Listening and History.
Back to Reading Week, my dad will be reading to the class one day and so will my husband, so please don't be shy. You never know, you may expose a child to a book that they never knew existed and have an impact on a child's life. Please contact me if you are interested. You can call me 799-6899 ext 3054, but that is the slowest way of communicating. Email is best!
