Professional Responsibility
I really don't like to think about my responsibility as a teacher, it is a bit overwhelming. Even though it scares me to death, I do embrace it. I am responsible for each child that enters my classroom. That is a big deal to me. Caring for 35+ different children and their various needs can be a lot to deal with. Whether it be giving them a snack because they didn't eat breakfast, hugging them just because you can see that they are having a rough day, not putting an F on their paper even though they missed every single question, letting them call home in the middle of class because they need to tell their mom "I love you" because they forgot to when she dropped them off and you can see the guilt and tears welling up in their eyes, or buying a birthday present for them because I know their foster parent won't. No matter what, it is my responsibility as a teacher and as a person.
My very first year teaching I received a thank you letter (it still sits on my desk today) from a mother of one of my students. It didn't say thank you for teaching my son how to add with regrouping or how to write a complete sentence. It said thank you for modeling to my son what a human being should be like in our society. This mom went on to say that I made learning fun for him and made her realize that teachers don't have to be mean and strict to get a student to learn or behave. I read that letter every time I need a reminder of why I chose this career.
Along with modeling basic life skills and teaching the curriculum, it is my responsibility to keep learning for my own benefit. If you look at my resume you can see what educational development classes I have taken and what school committees I have participated in. I learn something new from the students all the time. The knowledge they possess is inspiring. I respond well to constructive criticism and am open to any suggestions whether it be from a student, teacher, school staff, and/or parents.
It is my responsibility to provide parents with information about what is going on at school and our classroom. This website speaks for itself. I try my best to give as much information as I can. I am available by phone 702-799-6899 ext 3041, and email rlferreiro@interact.ccsd.net.
